Seen at the Architectural Digest Home Show: Crafted in the U.S.A.

While walking the aisles at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show last month in New York City, I noticed a trend towards American-made products. Perhaps it had been there all along… but I began to sense a notable increase in the number of artisans. Entrepreneurs who go “all-in” to deliver us beautifully crafted furniture, concrete creations and more. And by buying locally made products – we might be just a tad bit greener too. Here are just a few of the American-made craftspeople we visited with:

Bornholm Kitchen offers warm modern kitchens, islands, vanities and furniture. The authentic Scandinavian aesthetic is inspired by the spirit of Bornholm, a tiny island off the coast of Denmark – yet handcrafted in the U.S. Bornholm is the ancestral birthplace of New York designer Susan Serra, CKD, CAPS, and daughter Kelly Serra Donovan. Susan sees the kitchen as a social environment and designed Bornholm as a furniture line for kitchens. As one interior designer commented in passing, the kitchen as furniture is the kitchen of the future.

 Trueform Concrete fabricates kitchen and bath countertops, tabletops, bar tops, fireplace surrounds and more – right in their NJ studio. Concrete is becoming increasingly important to designers and homeowners as it allows for total flexibility in customizing form, style and color. Advances in seals and structure allow for increased creativity and longevity in concrete designs.

Imagine a fantastic sculpture that is not only beautiful, but does double duty as a light and a stereo speaker! Then you have Ton Art in Scarsdale, NY. Present Frank Burgel describes Ton Art in their brochure as, “A collaboration between artists, designers and craftspeople, creating sonic sculptures that unite light and sound in three dimensional form.” Their limited edition pieces can be found at www.tonartllc.com.

Hand made in New England, The New Traditionalists takes furniture concepts reminiscent of my grandmother’s high rise apartment and totally twists them into something chic, hip and modern.
